In short: With a circulation of over 31 million copies per issue, The Watchtower is a global publishing phenomenon. Founded in 1879, this religious magazine serves as the primary voice for Jehovah's Witnesses, translating complex theological doctrines into hundreds of languages while operating entirely through the efforts of unpaid volunteers.

Established by Charles Taze Russell in July 1879, the magazine was originally titled Zion's Watch Tower and Herald of Christ's Presence. Russell intended the publication to highlight his conviction that the world was entering the final days of the Gospel age. Over the decades, the title underwent several revisions, eventually settling on its current name, The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah's Kingdom, in 1939. Today, the magazine is managed by the central leadership of Jehovah's Witnesses, with content produced by regional writing teams and reviewed by editors before being disseminated globally.

The publication functions as the official medium for sharing the group's core beliefs, which center on the idea that God’s kingdom is a literal government destined to replace all existing earthly powers. Since 2008, the content has been split into two distinct formats: a Public Edition, intended for general distribution, and a Study Edition, which provides specialized material for members. The Study Edition is used during weekly congregation meetings, where attendees participate in a structured question-and-answer format to reinforce their understanding of biblical prophecies and moral conduct.

The magazine's distribution model underwent a significant shift in 1990. Following a United States Supreme Court ruling regarding the taxation of religious literature, the organization moved away from requesting specific payments for copies. By January 2000, the magazine became available worldwide on a voluntary donation basis. This transition was designed to simplify their educational mission and distinguish their work from commercial religious enterprises. Today, the publication is printed in nineteen countries and translated into hundreds of languages, maintaining its status as a cornerstone of the faith's outreach efforts.
