From Newspaper Supplement to Global Data Powerhouse: The Evolution of Times Higher Education
In short: Born in 1971 as a newspaper supplement, Times Higher Education has transformed from a weekly print publication into a digital-first global authority on university rankings. Now owned by private equity, it has expanded its influence through strategic acquisitions, international partnerships, and a massive footprint in the higher education market.
Originally launched on 15 October 1971 as The Times Higher Education Supplement, the publication was a sister paper to the Times Educational Supplement and affiliated with The Times. Under early editors like Peter Scott, who served from 1976 to 1992, the magazine established a reputation for independent journalism, famously endorsing the Labour Party despite being part of Rupert Murdoch’s News International. It also became a pioneer in digital media, serving as what editor Auriol Stevens called the 'canary in the coal mine' by being the first of Murdoch’s UK titles to move its archives and job advertisements online.
The publication’s trajectory shifted significantly in the 1980s when it began pioneering peer-reviewed reputation comparisons, which eventually evolved into the influential league tables of UK universities. This data-driven focus culminated in the 2004 launch of the World University Rankings. Over the decades, the magazine has navigated a complex series of ownership changes, moving from News International to Exponent Private Equity in 2005, then to TPG Capital in 2013, and finally to Inflexion Private Equity Partners in 2019. Each transition has seen the brand pivot further toward data, branding products, and global influence.
Today, Times Higher Education operates as an online-only entity, having ceased print publication in December 2024. Its business model has diversified far beyond journalism, encompassing student recruitment partnerships, international summits, and the acquisition of platforms like Inside Higher Education and Poets&Quants. By aligning with government ministries—such as its 2024 agreement with Hungary to promote the country's academic excellence—and maintaining its massive ranking infrastructure, the organization has cemented itself as a central player in the global governance and marketing of higher education.
