A frantic South Korean thriller where every character is caught in a lethal web
In short: In Na Hong-jin's 2010 action thriller, a desperate taxi driver accepts a hit to escape crushing debt. But as he enters South Korea, he discovers he is merely a pawn in a chaotic, bloody game of betrayal involving gangsters, businessmen, and unexpected motives.
Directed by Na Hong-jin, The Yellow Sea is a high-octane South Korean thriller that follows Gu-nam, an ethnic Korean taxi driver in Yanji, China. Driven by serious debt and the disappearance of his wife, Gu-nam accepts a contract from local gangster Myun Jung-hak to assassinate a professor named Kim Seung-hyun in South Korea. The deal promises a payment of CN¥57,000 (US$10,000), but the mission quickly spirals into a nightmare of deception.
The film is noted for its intense, frenetic energy and visceral violence. Critics have described it as a mix of bone-crunching action and romantic melancholy, with some noting its rapid-fire editing and unrelenting stamina. The narrative is driven by a series of twists; for instance, it is eventually revealed that the very person who hired Gu-nam to kill Seung-hyun was actually being manipulated by a web of affairs and business interests. Even the victim's wife is revealed to have had a hand in the plot.
Following its 22 December 2010 South Korean debut, the movie achieved major commercial success, moving 1.05 million tickets within five days and reaching a national total of 2,142,742. While some critics argued the film's nearly two-and-a-half-hour runtime felt excessive or lacked cohesion, others praised its impressive power and 'bite-strength.' The film's complex themes of desperation and betrayal are highlighted by the fact that nearly every character is caught in a cycle of violence fueled by personal secrets.
The film also marked a notable reunion for director Na Hong-jin and lead actors Ha Jung-woo and Kim Yoon-seok, who had previously collaborated on the 2008 film The Chaser.
