Can data mining prove a curse is actually just a cycle of social prejudice?
In short: In the 2025 South Korean series The Witch, a brilliant data miner becomes obsessed with a woman shunned by her community. While locals blame her for mysterious injuries, he uses statistics to investigate the truth, challenging the destructive power of social stigma and the human capacity to overcome irrational fear.
Directed by Kim Tae-gyun and based on the webtoon by Kang Full, The Witch follows Park Mi-jeong, a woman isolated since childhood because those around her suffer unexplained accidents. Her classmate, Lee Dong-jin, never spoke to her in high school but remained convinced she was not a witch. Ten years later, after becoming a professional data miner, he encounters her on the Seoul subway and begins tracking her to identify a pattern behind the strange events.
The series explores the mechanics of witch hunts and how prejudice is internalized by society. Kim Tae-gyun adapted the thirty-chapter webtoon into a ten-episode drama, aiming to flesh out the characters and the interpersonal dynamics that drive the narrative. While some critics praised the show as a lyrical mystery romance that rejects clichés, others found the narrative structure repetitive, with some suggesting the story would have been more effective as a shorter film or a six-episode series.
The character of Lee Dong-jin sparked debate among critics regarding the ethics of his investigation. While some appreciated that he avoided direct contact without permission, others noted that his secret surveillance teetered on obsession or felt stalker-like. The production team attempted to address these concerns by adding depth to the characters, aiming to provide legitimacy to their actions. Ultimately, the show serves as a mirror to society, questioning how unfounded fears are accepted as truth and highlighting the courage required to break cycles of intolerance.
The series premiered on Channel A on February 15, 2025, achieving the highest premiere ratings in the network's history at 2.4% nationwide. Despite this strong start, its final rating of 2.6% was viewed as underwhelming compared to the network's previous drama, Check-in Hanyang. Nevertheless, the series found success on streaming platforms, ranking in the top ten on Netflix and performing strongly across various Asian markets via Viu, including reaching second place in Indonesia and Thailand.
