In short: Set against the backdrop of the Great Arab Revolt, Theeb follows a young boy navigating the treacherous Wadi Rum desert. This Jordanian production, featuring non-professional actors from local Bedouin communities, defied industry norms to earn an Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim as a startlingly authentic Bedouin Western.

Directed by Naji Abu Nowar and co-written with Bassel Ghandour, the 2014 film Theeb tells the story of an orphaned boy who must survive alone in the desert after his brother is killed. The narrative unfolds during the First World War, capturing the tension of the era as the Ottoman Empire faced the Great Arab Revolt. The production team spent a year living in Shakrieh village to immerse themselves in Bedouin culture, a commitment to authenticity that defined the project's unique character.

The film's production was a feat of endurance. Filmed over five weeks in challenging conditions, the crew faced extreme heat, sandstorms, and flash floods. Because the filmmakers insisted on using non-professional actors from the Bedouin community, they conducted workshops to prepare the cast. Jacir Eid Al-Hwietat, who played the lead, was initially quiet and shy, but his performance proved so compelling that he was cast immediately. The only professional actor involved was Jack Fox, who played the British officer.

Theeb achieved significant international recognition, including a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards—a historic first for Jordan. Its success at festivals, including a Best Director win for Abu Nowar at the 2014 Venice International Film Festival, helped it secure a strong box office run across eleven Arab countries. By blending a classic adventure structure with the harsh, beautiful reality of the Jordanian landscape, the film has been lauded by critics as a rare and memorable achievement in modern cinema.
