In short: Timeless, a science fiction drama about a trio thwarting history-altering terrorists, faced a turbulent production cycle. Despite being canceled twice by NBC, the show secured a reprieve through negotiations and ultimately delivered a two-part finale. Its journey from a pilot to a cult favorite remains a study in network persistence.

Created by Shawn Ryan and Eric Kripke, Timeless premiered on NBC in October 2016. The narrative follows a history professor, a Delta Force soldier, and an engineer who pilot the Lifeboat machine to stop Garcia Flynn, a rogue operative attempting to rewrite history. Their mission is complicated by Rittenhouse, a clandestine organization that funded the development of the time-travel technology.

The show’s path to completion was unconventional. NBC canceled the series after its first season in May 2017, only to reverse the decision three days later following discussions with Sony Pictures Television. A second season aired in 2018, followed by a second cancellation in June. However, the network eventually commissioned a two-part finale, which aired in December 2018 to resolve the series' remaining plot threads.

The production was also marked by legal friction. Onza Entertainment filed a lawsuit alleging that the show’s concept infringed upon the Spanish series El Ministerio del Tiempo, which also features a three-person team traveling through time to preserve historical events. While a request to dismiss the suit was initially denied in February 2017, the parties eventually reached an agreement and moved to dismiss the case.

Despite these hurdles, the series earned critical praise. Rotten Tomatoes reported an 83% approval rating for the first season, while the second season achieved a perfect 100% rating. Critics noted the show’s evolution, with the finale receiving a 90% approval rating for providing a festive and cohesive conclusion that satisfied the audience's desire for closure.
