How a 2021 film brought classic cartoon chaos into the real world
In short: The 2021 Tom and Jerry movie attempted a bold feat: blending 2D-inspired animation with live-action environments. By avoiding realistic CGI in favor of a stylized, vibrant aesthetic, the filmmakers sought to honor the spirit of the original shorts while navigating the complex technical rules of a hybrid world.
Directed by Tim Story, the 2021 film features a cat and mouse duo navigating a high-profile wedding at a Manhattan hotel. The project spent years in development, with previous iterations dating back to 2009 and 2015. Production eventually took place in Hertfordshire, England, between July and September 2019. The final script, written by Kevin Costello, focused on the hotel setting to provide a larger canvas for the characters' signature destructive antics.
The production team, led by visual effects supervisor Frazer Churchill and animation director Michael Eames, aimed to maintain the characters' classic two-dimensional look despite using 3D models. To achieve this, they utilized a draw-over phase where 2D artists guided character expressions and poses. New digital rigs allowed the animators to stretch and squash the characters, while a specialized tool generated outlines to mimic the vintage aesthetic. This approach was designed to be faster than traditional hand-drawn animation while keeping the characters' expressive, pure forms.
The film's visual style was intentionally bright and poppy, contrasting with the darker tones often found in Hollywood productions. Colorist John Daro used specific grading software to ensure the final look remained vibrant. During filming, puppeteers used physical figures to help the cast interact with the animated characters, which also assisted the crew with lighting and framing. The project drew inspiration from films like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Mary Poppins, aiming to create a seamless interaction between the animated and live-action worlds.
Upon its February 26, 2021 release, the film grossed $136.5 million worldwide against a production budget of $50 to $79 million. Despite receiving generally negative reviews, it found an audience on HBO Max, where it was streamed by 1.2 million U.S. households during its opening weekend. The film remains a notable example of modern attempts to recontextualize classic animation for a new generation.
