A supernatural game of truth or dare turns deadly for a group of students
In short: When a group of college students on spring break in Mexico are coerced into playing a seemingly innocent game, they discover the consequences are fatal. Directed by Jeff Wadlow, this supernatural horror film explores the terrifying reality of a curse that forces players to choose between honesty and survival.
The 2018 film Blumhouse's Truth or Dare follows a group of friends who encounter a sinister, demonic version of the classic party game at an abandoned mission in Rosarito, Mexico. After being tricked into participating by a stranger named Carter, the students return home to find themselves haunted by hallucinations of people with distorted, grinning faces. The rules are absolute: players must either complete their assigned truth or dare or face immediate death. As the game progresses, the group experiences personal betrayals and violent ends, eventually uncovering a dark history involving a convent massacre in the 1960s and a demon named Calux.
Produced by Jason Blum, the film was released on April 13, 2018, following a production budget of $3.5 million. Despite being a commercial success with a worldwide gross of $95.3 million, it was met with largely negative critical reception. Reviewers frequently criticized the film for its lack of genuine scares and its reliance on contrived horror tropes, with some describing it as a soap opera with a high mortality rate. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it an approval rating of just 15%, while audiences polled by CinemaScore provided a B- grade.
The production process was relatively swift, with principal photography occurring in Los Angeles between June 7 and July 12, 2017. Director Jeff Wadlow, who co-wrote the script with Michael Reisz, Jillian Jacobs, and Chris Roach, initially conceived the project after brainstorming ideas based on the title. Although there were early discussions regarding a potential sequel—including a meta-concept where the cast would play themselves—Wadlow confirmed in February 2024 that the project was ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
