In short: In 2001, the USS John C. Stennis transformed from a nuclear-powered warship into a massive cinematic venue. It hosted the world premiere of the Disney film Pearl Harbor, seating over 2,000 people on its flight deck to witness one of the world's largest movie screens.

The USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) is a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered supercarrier commissioned in 1995. While its primary mission is sustained combat air operations—capable of engaging aircraft, submarines, and land targets hundreds of miles away—it has also served as a high-profile platform for cultural diplomacy and public spectacle. Its role as a 'theater' highlighted the ship's unique ability to project American power and presence in both literal and symbolic ways. The ship's technical capabilities are vast. Powered by two nuclear reactors, it possesses virtually unlimited range and a top speed exceeding 30 knots. It carries approximately 3 million US gallons of fuel for its aircraft and escorts, and features four catapults and four arresting gear engines to launch and recover aircraft simultaneously.

During its 2013 deployment to the western Pacific, the carrier's deck served as a base for over 1,300 sorties flown in support of the war in Afghanistan. Beyond combat, the vessel has been involved in diverse maritime actions, from leading a rescue of a pirate-seized fishing vessel in 2012 to conducting large-scale naval movements through the Strait of Hormuz. A sophisticated RCOH is presently underway, swapping out legacy radar for the AN/SPY-6(V)2 EASR Rotating Radar to enhance tracking and sight while lowering the vessel's mass.

The ship's history is marked by both technical milestones and operational challenges. It conducted its first arrested landing in 1996 with a VX-23 F-14B and completed a 66,000-mile deployment in 2013. However, it has also faced incidents, including a 1999 grounding near San Diego that shut down its reactors for 45 minutes and a 2011 engine failure during launch training that resulted in a total aircraft loss.
