The US Navy ship that served as a floating command center for disaster relief
In short: From the shores of New Orleans to the coast of Liberia, the USS Iwo Jima has functioned as much more than a combat vessel. This Wasp-class amphibious assault ship has acted as a mobile hospital, a vital airfield, and even a high-stakes detention center.
Commissioned in 2001, the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) carries a legacy tied to the World War II battle for which it was named. During its keel laying in December 1997, Army Captain Jacklyn H. Lucas placed his Medal of Honor citation inside the hull, where it remains. The ship's motto, "Uncommon Valor," is a direct tribute to Admiral Chester W. Nimitz’s observation regarding the bravery of those who fought at Iwo Jima.
While designed for amphibious warfare, the ship's history is defined by humanitarian and crisis response. Following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Iwo Jima sailed up the Mississippi River to New Orleans. During this period, it served as the region's only functional airfield for helicopters, conducting over one thousand flight deck operations. The ship provided essential medical services, surgical care, and basic necessities like drinking water and hot meals to thousands of relief workers and National Guardsmen.
The vessel has also been a centerpiece for geopolitical maneuvers. It supported Operation Enduring Freedom in 2003 and participated in humanitarian assessments during the Second Liberian Civil War. More recently, the ship was involved in the high-profile Operation Absolute Resolve. In January 2026, following US strikes in Venezuela, the ship served as the location where President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores were taken into custody.
The ship's operational reach is vast, having been positioned off the coast of Yemen in 2015 to support embassy evacuations and participating in NATO exercises in Norway in 2018. Throughout its service, it has transitioned between homeports, moving from Norfolk to Mayport in 2014, and back to Norfolk in 2021 as part of a Navy consolidation plan.
