In short: Founded in 1900, Västerbottens-Kuriren evolved from a local Umeå publication into a regional powerhouse. By navigating political shifts, family ownership disputes, and the digital transition, the paper secured its status as the largest daily in Västerbotten County, while simultaneously shaping the region's cultural and athletic identity for over a century.

Västerbottens-Kuriren, commonly known as VK, released its inaugural edition on May 17, 1900. Its rapid expansion led it to become the leading newspaper in Västerbotten County by 1903, a title it has maintained ever since. The paper's early trajectory was heavily influenced by Gustav Rosén, a prominent figure in the Liberal People's Party who served as executive director until 1926. His tenure was marked by a brief departure to serve as Minister of Defence in the cabinet of Carl Gustav Ekman, after which his son, Stellan Rosén, assumed leadership at age 23. Following the collapse of the Ekman government in 1928, the elder Rosén returned to the paper as a political editor.

The ownership structure shifted significantly in 1929 when Rosén sold his controlling interest to J. M. Bäckström, a master builder who commissioned a new publishing headquarters in central Umeå. This building served as the paper's home until 1988. Following the death of the Bäckström family patriarch, internal disagreements among heirs eventually led to the paper being transferred to the VK-Press Foundation around 1978. Throughout the 20th century, the publication modernized its operations, notably becoming the first in Norrland to employ a dedicated press photographer, Harry Lindwall, in 1949.

In the modern era, VK expanded its influence by acquiring a majority stake in its competitor, Västerbottens Folkblad, reaching 91% ownership by 2003. The paper also diversified into lifestyle media by purchasing the entertainment magazine Nöjesmagasinet City. Despite facing circulation fluctuations—dropping from 34,700 copies in 2010 to 30,800 in 2013—the organization remains a cultural pillar. Since 1937, it has awarded the VK-guldet to the region's top athletes, including legends like Ingemar Stenmark and Marta Vieira da Silva, while its digital platform, VK.se, earned multiple nominations for the prestigious Stora Journalistpriset as an innovator in the field.
