In short: Founded in 2000 by Heorhii Gongadze and Olena Prytula, Ukrainska Pravda emerged from a trip to Washington to protest state censorship. Despite the tragic murder of its founder and the later killing of journalist Pavlo Sheremet, the outlet grew into Ukraine's most popular online news source, shaping the nation's political discourse.

Ukrainska Pravda was launched in April 2000, immediately following a nationwide referendum initiated by President Leonid Kuchma. The outlet quickly gained prominence for its investigative rigor and critical stance toward state power. Its early trajectory was marked by tragedy; founder Heorhii Gongadze was kidnapped and murdered in September 2000 after protesting against censorship. The subsequent release of the Melnychenko tapes, which allegedly implicated President Kuchma in the crime, catalyzed the publication's growth and solidified its role as a watchdog for democratic accountability.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, the outlet became a central pillar of Ukrainian civic life. It played a crucial role during the 2004 Orange Revolution by publishing exit poll data that exposed electoral fraud. In 2013, journalist Mustafa Nayyem used the platform to call for the protests that ignited the Euromaidan movement. The publication expanded into an integrated media group, launching specialized sites for economics, lifestyle, and sports, while maintaining a focus on investigative journalism that scrutinized the financial dealings of political elites, such as the Mezhyhiria residence of Viktor Yanukovych.

The organization has evolved significantly in recent years. In 2021, founder Olena Prytula transferred 100% of the publication's corporate rights to Dragon Capital, led by Tomáš Fiala, though the editorial team under Sevhil Musaieva continued its work unchanged. Today, the outlet sustains its operations through a tiered membership system, the UP Club, which invites readers to support investigative projects and documentary filmmaking. Despite the risks faced by its staff, including the 2016 assassination of executive director Pavlo Sheremet, Ukrainska Pravda remains a dominant force in the Ukrainian media landscape, consistently ranking as the most popular online news source in the country.
