In short: Vegeta began his journey as a despicable antagonist, a prince driven by a destructive temper and a desperate need for immortality. Yet, he transformed into one of anime's most iconic rivals, proving that a character's most compelling arc can be found in the transition from haughty villainy to selfless heroism.

Introduced in 1989, Vegeta was originally conceived by Akira Toriyama as a villain. However, the creator found his 'warped straightforwardness' unexpectedly interesting to write. While Toriyama initially harbored a dislike for the character because of his despicable nature, he eventually grew to appreciate his aloof superiority and cool demeanor. He even admitted that while he sometimes purposely killed the character to satisfy fan demands, he eventually considered him one of his favorite warriors alongside Piccolo.

Vegeta's narrative is defined by his obsession with surpassing Son Goku. Initially, he sought the Dragon Balls to achieve immortality and viewed himself as the universe's strongest fighter. After being severely beaten by Goku's Kaioken technique and forced into his Ozaru form, he faced deep humiliation. This rivalry fueled a complex transformation: from a tyrant who destroyed villages to a warrior who eventually united with heroes to thwart threats like Cell, Majin Buu, and the god of destruction, Beerus.

His redemption is marked by significant sacrifices and personal growth. He dedicated his life to protecting his family, specifically his son Trunks and his daughter Bulla. Key turning points included his admission of Goku as a friend during the battle against Majin Buu and his eventual use of a new technique to revive the victims of Namek as an act of redemption. By the time he achieved his 'Ultra Ego' form, Vegeta had moved from seeking personal glory to becoming a vital protector of the universe.

The character's legacy is cemented by his status as a premier example of the 'rival' archetype in manga history. His popularity has been so significant that he has frequently outperformed Goku in favorite-character polls, despite his initial role as a primary antagonist.
