In short: The fourth season of Vikings marks a massive shift in scope, moving from local raids to continental warfare. As Ragnar Lothbrok's influence grows, his sons begin to carve out their own empires, spanning from the shores of England to the depths of the Mediterranean Sea.

Season 4 of the historical drama Vikings premiered on February 18, 2016, and serves as a pivotal expansion of the series' narrative. While the show began with the Lindisfarne raid in 793, this season focuses on the complex geopolitical maneuvering of the Viking Age. It tracks the escalating tensions between Ragnar Lothbrok and his brother Rollo in Francia, while simultaneously following Bjorn Ironside's maritime expeditions into the Mediterranean Sea. The narrative also explores the Viking invasion of England during this period. Additionally, the show depicts the internal conflicts within the Kattegat leadership.

The production structure of the season reflects its ambitious scale. A total of twenty episodes formed this two-part, double-season production. The first half, which concluded on April 21, 2016, was produced by Octagon Films, while the final four episodes were produced by TM Productions. This transition in production teams coincided with a shift in focus toward the Viking invasion of England and the internal power dynamics of the Earldom of Kattegat. The first eight episodes were produced by Keith Thompson. Sanne Wohlenberg took over production for the ninth through sixteenth episodes.

Character arcs in this season highlight the fragmentation of the Viking legacy. Ragnar's sons—including Ivar the Boneless, Hvitserk, Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye, and Ubbe—begin to emerge as primary figures in the second half of the season. Meanwhile, the series explores the roles of established figures like Queen Lagertha, who controls the Earldom of Hedeby, and Duke Rollo, who holds the title of Duke of Normandy granted by Emperor Charles of West Francia. Lagertha eventually ascends to become the queen of Kattegat. The series also features the religious warrior priest Bishop Heahmund.
