In short: In the 2026 science fiction film War Machine, a group of elite Ranger recruits faces an unexpected threat during a simulated forest mission. When an alien machine descends from the sky, their blank training rounds prove useless, forcing the survivors to rely on ingenuity to survive an impending global war.

Directed by Patrick Hughes, War Machine follows a traumatized Corporal, identified by his candidate number 81, as he navigates the grueling Ranger Assessment and Selection Program in Colorado. While participating in the Death March, a final training exercise designed to test endurance and tactical skill, 81 and his squad encounter a mysterious object that transforms into a lethal, autonomous machine. This encounter occurs simultaneously with reports of an asteroid breaking apart in the atmosphere, which later reveals itself to be an invading army of extraterrestrial machines.

The film explores the tension between 81’s personal history and his military duties. Haunted by the death of his brother in Afghanistan, 81 initially resists leadership roles, struggling with PTSD and a sense of detachment from his peers. However, when the squad is hunted by the machine, he must step up to lead the survivors. By discovering that the machine possesses a vulnerable ventilation system, 81 manages to destroy it, providing humanity with a critical piece of intelligence. This discovery leads to his assignment to lead the counter-offensive against the alien threat.

Development of the project began in 2017, with principal photography taking place in Australia and New Zealand between September and December 2024. Although originally intended for a wide theatrical release, the film ultimately debuted on Netflix on March 6, 2026, following a limited Australian theatrical run to secure tax rebates. The film achieved significant commercial success, becoming the ninth most-watched Netflix film of all time with over 118 million views in its first five weeks. Critics offered mixed reviews, generally praising the action spectacle and Alan Ritchson’s performance while noting the formulaic nature of the narrative. Following its strong performance, Netflix confirmed the development of a sequel in June 2026, with Hughes returning to helm the expanding franchise.
