In short: Duncan Jones’s Warcraft was a massive global spectacle that defied domestic expectations. While critics panned its dense mythology and reliance on computer-generated imagery, the film shattered records in China. Despite its $439 million worldwide haul, the project struggled to reach profitability, leaving the future of its cinematic universe uncertain.

Announced in 2006 as a partnership between Legendary Pictures and Blizzard Entertainment, the film underwent years of development before Duncan Jones took over as director in 2013. Jones sought to subvert the genre's standard tropes, moving away from a simple good-versus-evil narrative to a more balanced perspective where both humans and orcs faced complex moral dilemmas. The production, which featured extensive motion-capture performances, was deeply personal for Jones, who described his experience as beginning and ending with his family's struggles with cancer.

Upon its 2016 release, the film faced a polarized reception. Critics largely dismissed it as a sluggish adaptation burdened by excessive exposition and clichéd dialogue, resulting in a 29% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences were notably more receptive, awarding it a B+ grade on CinemaScore. The film’s performance was heavily lopsided; it earned only $47.4 million in the United States but secured $391.7 million internationally, with China alone contributing $225.5 million. This made it the first video game adaptation to surpass $400 million globally.

Despite these figures, the film’s financial success was hampered by a $160 million production budget and an additional $110 million in promotional costs. Estimates suggest the studio lost between $15 million and $40 million, as the film failed to meet its $450–500 million break-even threshold. While Jones initially hoped to adapt the sequel from the game Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, he later indicated that a follow-up was unlikely. As of 2020, reports suggested Legendary was developing a new project, though whether it will serve as a sequel or a reboot remains unconfirmed.
