The chaotic behind-the-scenes feud that fueled a classic 1991 comedy
In short: What About Bob? is remembered as a sharp, humane comedy, but its production was defined by genuine hostility. The intense, real-life friction between stars Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss mirrored their characters' onscreen dynamic, creating a volatile set that required bodyguards to keep the two actors separated between takes.
Released in 1991, the film follows Bob Wiley, a neurotic patient who tracks his psychotherapist, Dr. Leo Marvin, on vacation. While the film earned $63.7 million and a 71% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the off-screen reality was far less harmonious. Director Frank Oz noted that he intentionally leaned into the actors' opposing styles—Dreyfuss being highly structured and Murray being largely improvisational—to capture the best performances. However, the tension escalated into personal animosity.
Accounts of the production describe a series of explosive incidents. Richard Dreyfuss alleged that an intoxicated Murray screamed at him and threw an ashtray, while producer Laura Ziskin reported that Murray once threw her into a lake and broke her sunglasses during a dispute over scheduling. Dreyfuss's son, Ben, later claimed that the production briefly shut down until Disney hired bodyguards to keep the two leads apart. Despite these conflicts, both actors have acknowledged the film's success; Dreyfuss even confirmed in 2020 that he has forgiven Murray.
The film's legacy remains tied to its unique character study, which critics like Leonard Maltin compared to the dynamic between the Road Runner and the Coyote. While some reviewers, such as Gene Siskel, felt Dreyfuss's portrayal of the doctor was too angry, others praised the chemistry between the two leads. The film’s impact was significant enough that Bravo ranked it 44th on their 2013 list of the 100 funniest movies, and Slant Magazine later included Murray’s performance on a list of famous movie psychopaths.
