A poetic journey through Jeju life in the 2025 hit When Life Gives You Tangerines
In short: This South Korean series captures the life of Ae-sun, a girl born in 1951 with dreams of becoming a poet, and her devoted partner, Gwan-sik. Narrated by their daughter, the story offers a nostalgic, deeply moving look at the Korean experience that critics have hailed as the best drama of 2025.
Released on Netflix in March 2025, the series is a slice-of-life romance directed by Kim Won-seok and written by Lim Sang-choon. It centers on the enduring bond between Ae-sun, played by IU, and Gwan-sik, portrayed by Park Bo-gum. The narrative spans their lives, beginning with Ae-sun’s birth in Jeju in 1951, and is framed through the perspective of their daughter, Yang Geum-myeong. The title itself is derived from the Jeju phrase for expressing gratitude for someone's persistent efforts.
The show earned significant critical acclaim, securing four wins out of eight nominations at the 61st Baeksang Arts Awards, including the prestigious Best Drama title. Time magazine further solidified its status by naming it the premier Korean drama of the year. Much of this success is attributed to the chemistry between the leads and the show's ability to evoke a profound sense of warmth and nostalgia, drawing frequent comparisons to the beloved 2015 series Reply 1988.
Beyond the central romance, the series features an expansive cast that populates the world of Jeju. Characters range from family members like Ae-sun’s mother, a haenyeo, to various figures in the community, such as local business owners and school teachers. This ensemble approach allows the drama to weave a complex tapestry of trials and triumphs, grounding the personal story of Ae-sun and Gwan-sik within a broader, relatable cultural context that resonates with viewers seeking authentic, character-driven storytelling.
