In short: When 17-year-old Kat Connors’ mother vanishes in 1988, the teenager seems strangely unfazed, continuing her own life while the mystery lingers. Gregg Araki’s 2014 film adaptation of Laura Kasischke’s novel weaves a disorienting narrative between past and present, leading to a shocking revelation hidden in plain sight.

The film follows Kat, played by Shailene Woodley, as she navigates the aftermath of her mother Eve’s sudden disappearance. Eve, a former thrill-seeker turned domesticated housewife, struggled with the monotony of her marriage to the ordinary Brock. As Kat explores her own sexuality, the narrative frequently shifts between her present-day life and flashbacks of her mother’s increasingly erratic behavior, including attempts to seduce Kat’s neighbor, Phil.

The mystery deepens when Detective Scieziesciez suggests that Brock may have murdered his wife after discovering her infidelity. Kat initially dismisses these suspicions, even as she engages in her own flirtatious encounters with the investigator. The tension culminates when Kat, home from college in 1991, begins to have recurring dreams of her mother trapped in snow, leading her to suspect that the truth lies within the family home’s basement freezer.

The resolution arrives through a dark, violent twist. It is revealed that on the night of her death, Eve returned home to find her husband, Brock, in bed with Phil. When Eve responded with hysterical laughter, a humiliated Brock strangled her to death. He later moved her body to a nearby hill, where it was eventually discovered after he confessed to the crime and took his own life in a jail cell.

Critics offered a mixed reception to the film, which premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. While reviewers praised Woodley’s performance, many felt the film struggled to balance its dual identity as a suburban thriller and a coming-of-age drama. Despite its polarizing narrative, the film remains a notable exploration of domestic repression and the haunting, lingering effects of buried family secrets.
