A mystery where a dry riverbed hides twenty years of secrets
In short: In the Australian outback, a crime scene reveals more than just a murder. Federal agent Aaron Falk returns to his hometown to solve a tragedy, only to uncover a web of embezzlement, hidden affairs, and a haunting truth about his own past that was buried in a literal dry riverbed.
Based on Jane Harper's 2016 novel, the film follows Aaron Falk as he investigates the murder-suicide of Luke Hadler. While initial suspicions point toward local land disputes or financial motives involving a neighbor named Grant, the investigation reveals a more complex layer of deception. It is eventually uncovered that the school principal, Scott Whitlam, committed the murders to conceal his embezzlement from the school's funds to cover gambling debts.
The narrative utilizes a non-linear structure to explore Falk’s history. Twenty years prior, Falk fled the town after being suspected in the death of his girlfriend, Ellie. Throughout the investigation, he faces hostility from residents who still brand him a murderer. The film weaves these past traumas into the present, showing how community perception can be shaped by incomplete information and long-held grudges.
The climax provides a profound resolution to Falk's internal conflict. By discovering Ellie’s hidden journal in a rocky crevice, he learns she was fleeing domestic abuse from her father, Mal. He realizes that while he spent years believing his presence caused her death, she had actually died at the hands of her father after attempting to escape him. The film concludes with Falk finding peace by uncovering this truth, literally and figuratively walking away from the ghosts of his past.
Commercially, 'The Dry' was a significant success for Australian independent cinema. It earned over A$20.1 million in 2020, making it one of the highest-grossing Australian film openings ever. Despite being delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, it secured international distribution and critical acclaim for its atmospheric tension.
