Why a critically panned road trip movie became a massive box office success
In short: Released in 2007, the biker comedy Wild Hogs was savaged by critics who labeled it a collection of lazy stereotypes. Yet, the film defied its dismal reviews to become a financial powerhouse, grossing over $253 million worldwide and proving that audience appeal often operates independently of critical consensus.
The narrative follows four suburban friends—a lawyer, a dentist, a plumber, and a programmer—who trade their mundane lives for a motorcycle journey across the United States. Their trip takes an unexpected turn when they cross paths with a genuine outlaw biker gang, the Del Fuegos, leading to a series of slapstick confrontations. While the plot relies on classic fish-out-of-water tropes, the film’s production was a significant endeavor, featuring custom motorcycles provided by Harley-Davidson and cameos from the famous Orange County Choppers team.
Despite a meager 14% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film was a commercial triumph. Producer Brian Robbins attributed this success to Disney’s willingness to invest in a high-profile cast of four experienced, albeit expensive, actors. This strategy paid off immediately; the film opened on March 2, 2007, with $39.7 million in its first weekend, nearly tripling the debut of its competition. It maintained momentum throughout its theatrical run, marking a rare $100 million domestic hit for John Travolta.
The film’s legacy is a mix of legal friction and cancelled ambition. Shortly after its release, the Hells Angels filed a lawsuit against Disney over the unauthorized use of their name and logo, though the case was eventually dismissed. Plans for a sequel, titled Wild Hogs 2: Bachelor Ride, were announced for 2010 but were scrapped in late 2009. This cancellation followed the poor performance of another Disney comedy, Old Dogs, signaling a shift in the studio's appetite for similar projects despite the original film's surprising financial dominance.
