How a near-fatal plane crash defined the life and legacy of singer Jane Froman
In short: In 1943, singer Jane Froman survived a harrowing plane crash in Portugal that left her partially crippled. Rather than retreating, she spent the war years performing for troops on crutches. Her resilience became the subject of a 1952 musical biopic that dominated the charts and redefined Hollywood stardom.
The 1952 film With a Song in My Heart chronicles the life of Jane Froman, a radio star whose career was irrevocably altered by a 1943 accident. On February 22, 1943, the Boeing 314 Pan American Clipper carrying Froman crashed into the Tagus River near Lisbon. The tragedy left her severely injured, necessitating the use of crutches for the remainder of her life. Despite these physical limitations, Froman continued her work, famously touring to entertain U.S. troops during World War II.
The production process for the film was complex, involving intense competition among major studios. While MGM offered a higher sum for the rights to her life story, Froman ultimately chose 20th Century Fox after consulting with producer Lamar Trotti. The film underwent several title changes and casting shifts; Susan Hayward was eventually cast as Froman, with the real singer providing the vocals for the musical numbers. Froman served as a technical adviser on the set, though she notably refused to watch the recreation of the plane crash that had changed her life.
The film was a significant commercial success, and its soundtrack became a cultural phenomenon. The Capitol Records album spent 25 weeks at the top of the Billboard charts, earning the title of the best-selling album of 1952. Beyond the music, the film served as a launchpad for new talent; Robert Wagner, who played a small role, received such overwhelming fan mail—reaching 3,000 letters per week—that the studio immediately moved to elevate his status to that of a major star.
