In short: In a departure from saving the world, the Marvel Cinematic Universe explores the mundane struggles of an aspiring actor. Simon Williams, a man with secret ionic powers, finds that his abilities are a professional liability in a version of Hollywood where superpowered individuals are legally barred from working on film sets.

Wonder Man, released on Disney+ in January 2026, serves as a metafictional character study within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series follows Simon Williams, an actor who views his ionic energy-based powers as a hindrance to his career. His journey is complicated by the Doorman Clause, a legal restriction that prohibits superpowered people from working in the entertainment industry. This regulation is named after DeMarr Davis, a minor character who gained teleportation abilities after a bizarre incident involving a door-filled dimension and a famous actor, Josh Gad.

The narrative centers on an unlikely friendship between Simon and Trevor Slattery, a veteran actor attempting to rebuild his reputation after his past as a terrorist impersonator. As they both audition for a remake of an in-universe film titled Wonder Man, the series examines the harsh realities of the acting profession, including ego, rejection, and the pursuit of fame. Showrunner Andrew Guest and director Destin Daniel Cretton designed the show to feel distinct from traditional superhero media, intentionally avoiding standard tropes like world-ending threats or heavy visual effects.

Production of the series faced significant hurdles, including a shutdown during the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike and a tragic on-set accident in February 2024 that claimed the life of lighting technician J.C. Osorio. Despite these challenges, the creative team completed the project with what Marvel Studios described as one of its lowest budgets to date. While the show received positive critical reception and earned Yahya Abdul-Mateen II an Emmy nomination, its tenure was brief; Marvel Studios renewed it for a second season in March 2026 before canceling the project that July.
