Why a supernatural drama about witches struggled to survive its own second season
In short: Based on Melissa de la Cruz’s 2011 novel, Witches of East End brought a soapy, campy take on witchcraft to Lifetime. Despite a strong premiere and a dedicated fanbase that campaigned for its revival, the series faced a sharp ratings decline that ultimately led to its cancellation after just two seasons.
Premiering on October 6, 2013, the show centered on the Beauchamp family: mother Joanna, played by Julia Ormond, and her daughters Freya and Ingrid, portrayed by Jenna Dewan and Rachel Boston. The narrative followed these women as they discovered their magical heritage in the fictional seaside town of East End. The production was marked by significant behind-the-scenes shifts, including a move from filming in Wilmington, North Carolina, to Vancouver, British Columbia, and several high-profile casting changes, such as Eric Winter replacing Patrick Heusinger as Dash Gardiner.
Critical reception was notably polarized. While some reviewers dismissed the show as "feeble" or "humorless," others praised its "zippy repartee" and campy, lighthearted tone, which served as a contrast to the heavier supernatural fare airing on Sunday nights. Despite the mixed reviews, the show initially performed well, drawing 1.93 million viewers for its series premiere. However, the momentum proved difficult to sustain as the second season progressed.
By November 4, 2014, Lifetime announced the show’s cancellation, citing a drop in average viewership from 1.67 million in the first season to 1.13 million in the second. The news sparked a massive fan-led movement, including an online petition that garnered over 280,000 signatures by February 2024. The campaign drew support from high-profile figures like Channing Tatum and William Shatner, as well as stars from other iconic supernatural series, yet the show remained off the air.
