In short: Before he became the reclusive genius of the chocolate factory, Willy Wonka was a naive, aspiring magician arriving in the city with big dreams. This 2023 musical fantasy explores the chocolatier's early struggles against a corrupt cartel, offering a fresh perspective on a beloved character's journey toward his iconic future.

Directed by Paul King, Wonka serves as a companion piece to the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Set 25 years before the events of the original story, the film follows a young, optimistic Wonka as he attempts to open his own shop. His path is blocked by the Chocolate Cartel, a trio of greedy rivals who control the city's supply and bribe local officials to maintain their monopoly.

The production drew inspiration from Roald Dahl's own archives, where King discovered the author had once considered exploring Wonka's backstory. To build the supporting cast, King looked to other Dahl works, modeling the Cartel after the villains in Fantastic Mr Fox and basing the antagonist Mrs. Scrubitt on the short story The Landlady. King envisioned the Cartel as a savage indictment of capitalism, contrasting their greed with Wonka's inherent generosity.

Timothée Chalamet was cast as the lead without an audition, with King impressed by the actor's high school performances. Chalamet portrayed the character as a Charlie Chaplin-esque innocent, a stark contrast to the cynical, broken version seen in later years. The film, which grossed over $634 million worldwide, also marked a departure from previous adaptations by casting Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa, a decision that sparked significant discussion regarding the representation of dwarf actors in the franchise.

The film's aesthetic was heavily influenced by classic European storybooks and musicals like Oliver!. Filming took place across the United Kingdom, including locations in Oxford, Bath, and Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. While the film received positive reviews and earned a BAFTA nomination for Outstanding British Film, it remains a distinct origin story that intentionally avoids reinventing the 1971 classic, instead aiming to capture the emotional depth found in Dahl's original writing.
