In short: While the 2017 Woody Woodpecker film was relegated to direct-to-video status in the United States, it found a massive, dedicated audience in Brazil. The live-action hybrid, featuring a photorealistic CGI bird, grossed over $15 million globally, proving that the character's decades-long popularity in South America remained a powerful cultural force.

The 2017 film Woody Woodpecker, directed by Alex Zamm, represents a unique case of regional cinematic strategy. Although produced by Universal 1440 Entertainment for a global market, the film was specifically tailored to appeal to Brazilian audiences, where the cartoon had been a television staple for 38 years by the time of the movie's release. To capitalize on this, the production team cast Brazilian actress Thaila Ayala to boost local interest, and the film even saw a promotional tour where costumed characters visited major cities like Brasília and Rio de Janeiro.

The production process itself was marked by significant shifts. Earlier attempts to bring the character to the screen by Illumination Entertainment were scrapped because the concepts were deemed too thin for a feature-length runtime. Eventually, the team settled on a live-action/CGI hybrid approach, filming in Squamish, British Columbia, during the summer of 2016. By keeping the bird as the only surreal element in a realistic setting, the filmmakers aimed for a cost-effective production that could leverage the character's established slapstick legacy.

Critical reception was largely negative, with the film holding a 13% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics pointed to unoriginal storytelling and a reliance on crude humor as major drawbacks. Despite this, the film's financial performance in Brazil was notable; it debuted at $1.5 million and actually saw a 45.4% increase in its second weekend, climbing to the top of the local box office. This success paved the way for a 2024 Netflix sequel, Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp, which continued the franchise's journey into the streaming era.

The film's plot centers on a conflict between a real estate lawyer and the bird, who is identified in the story as an endangered pileated red-crowned woodpecker. This narrative choice mirrors the character's history, with the lawyer's name, Lance Walters, serving as a subtle nod to the character's creator, Walter Lantz. While the film struggled to find a foothold with American critics, its ability to sustain a franchise highlights the enduring, if localized, appeal of classic animation icons.
