Can a forty-year-old mother successfully pass as a twenty-something to restart her career?
In short: After a difficult divorce, Liza Miller discovers the modern job market is unforgiving toward age. A chance encounter with a younger man inspires her to lie about her age to land a role in publishing. She must now navigate the high-stakes world of New York City while maintaining her double life.
Created by Darren Star and based on the 2005 novel by Pamela Redmond Satran, Younger follows the story of Liza Miller, a 40-year-old mother who finds herself sidelined by ageism after a divorce. To secure a job and support her daughter's college education, she adopts a persona as a woman in her mid-20s. This deception leads her into the competitive environment of Empirical Press, where she befriends a young editor named Kelsey Peters and navigates a complicated romance with a tattoo artist named Josh.
The series explores the tension of maintaining two distinct lives that frequently collide. As Liza climbs the corporate ladder, she must work twice as hard to keep her true identity hidden from her boss, Diana Trout, and her colleagues. The show’s narrative is marked by the shifting dynamics of the publishing industry, featuring characters like the tech billionaire Bryce Reiger and rival publisher Cheryl Sussman, who threatens to expose Liza's secret. The production also weaves in real-world elements, such as the publication of the book Marriage Vacation, which was launched by Simon & Schuster in June 2018.
Premiering on March 31, 2015, on TV Land, the show became the network's longest-running original series. Over its seven-season run, it transitioned from traditional cable to streaming platforms, concluding its final season on Paramount+ and Hulu in June 2021. The production is noted for its costume design by Patricia Field, who previously collaborated with Darren Star on Sex and the City. By the end of its run, the show had evolved significantly, with cast changes and shifts in distribution, ultimately finding a new audience on Netflix by 2025.
