How YouTube’s annual celebration of internet culture became its most disliked video ever
In short: For a decade, YouTube Rewind was the platform’s flagship year-in-review, blending viral trends and creator cameos into a high-production spectacle. Yet, by 2018, the series had alienated its core audience, sparking a massive backlash that ultimately led to the cancellation of the project and the eventual scrubbing of its history.
Launched in 2010, the first YouTube Rewind was a simple list of the year's top ten viral videos. Over the next few years, the series evolved into a star-studded production featuring popular creators, internet memes, and elaborate musical mashups. By 2015, the videos were heavily stylized, incorporating complex references to platform history and gaming culture. However, as the series grew more corporate, the disconnect between YouTube’s curated vision and the community’s actual interests began to widen.
The turning point arrived in 2018 with 'Everyone Controls Rewind.' The video was widely panned for featuring celebrities unaffiliated with the platform while ignoring the most significant creator-led moments of the year. Critics argued that YouTube was attempting to sanitize its image to appease advertisers, resulting in a 'cringey' product that felt out of touch. The backlash was historic; the video became the most-disliked in the platform's history, eventually accumulating over 20 million dislikes before YouTube disabled public dislike counts.
Following the disastrous 2018 and 2019 installments, YouTube canceled the series in 2021, opting for a brief interactive livestream experiment called Escape2021. The void left by the official series was filled by independent creators like MrBeast, who produced their own versions to honor the year's true milestones. By December 2025, the original Rewind videos were unlisted, and by January 2026, they were made private, effectively erasing a decade of platform history that had once defined the internet's annual zeitgeist.
