In short: In the 2005 comedy Yours, Mine & Ours, a rigid Coast Guard Admiral and a free-spirited handbag designer marry, instantly merging their two disparate broods. As their eighteen children conspire to sabotage the union, the couple faces a chaotic test of their conflicting philosophies and their newfound commitment to family.

Directed by Raja Gosnell and released in November 2005, this remake of the 1968 original stars Dennis Quaid as Frank Beardsley and Rene Russo as Helen North. The narrative centers on the friction between Frank’s regimented lifestyle and Helen’s laissez-faire approach to parenting. After a whirlwind romance leads to a sudden marriage, the couple moves into a home in New London, Connecticut, bringing together Frank’s eight children and Helen’s ten, alongside a menagerie of pets including a pot-bellied pig.

The children, initially appalled by the rapid union, orchestrate a campaign to drive a wedge between their parents by highlighting their philosophical differences. This tension culminates in a disastrous party and a subsequent fight that nearly ends the marriage. However, the children eventually realize their parents' genuine affection and work to reconcile them, leading to a climactic reunion at a lighthouse. The film’s production was fast-tracked by Paramount Pictures and MGM, aiming to replicate the success of 2003’s Cheaper by the Dozen.

Critical reception was largely negative, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting only a 6% approval rating from 106 critics, who frequently cited predictable plotting and repetitive physical comedy. Despite this, audiences polled by CinemaScore awarded the film an A- grade. Financially, the production grossed $72.7 million against a $45 million budget. Notably, the film’s February 2006 VHS release marked one of the final instances of a major motion picture being distributed in that format.
