From standalone hits to a shared cinematic spy universe
In short: How do three separate action films become a cohesive cinematic universe? The YRF Spy Universe transformed standalone Bollywood blockbusters into a sprawling web of interconnected agents, shared histories, and high-stakes crossovers, proving that narrative synergy can turn individual successes into a massive media franchise.
The YRF Spy Universe was not built from the ground up as a single plan. Rather, its origin lies in the popularity of three independent movies: War (2019), Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), and Ek Tha Tiger (2012). While the Tiger films were sequels, War initially had no connection to them. The universe was officially established after the success of War, when producers Aditya Chopra and director Siddharth Anand decided to link the three projects through shared characters and connecting plot lines.
The transition to a shared universe was solidified with Pathaan (2023), the first installment to feature characters from previous films, including a cameo by Salman Khan as Tiger. This expansion continued with Tiger 3 (2023), which featured cameos from both Pathaan and Kabir. The franchise has since expanded into a multi-media ecosystem including comic books, graphic novels, and video games. It also features a diverse cast of agents with complex backstories, such as Kabir Dhaliwal, a former soldier who went rogue but was later revealed to be on a covert mission, and Pathaan, who founded a special R&AW sub-division for retired, injured agents.
The universe is defined by its massive scale and commercial reach. Pathaan became the highest-grossing film in the universe, while the upcoming War 2 (2025) is set to be the most expensive at a budget of ₹400 crore. The franchise also explores varied narratives, from the feminist themes of Tiger 3 to the super-soldier program in the upcoming female-led film, Alpha. Despite its blockbuster status, the universe remains grounded in 'masala' cinema—a blend of international action aesthetics and traditional Hindi film tropes.
The universe's growth has faced logistical hurdles; for example, the project Tiger vs Pathaan was eventually shelved in February 2026 due to budget constraints. This highlights the tension between the ambitious scope of a shared universe and the financial realities of high-budget filmmaking.
