In short: Zig & Sharko, a slapstick series featuring a hungry hyena and a protective shark, has defied traditional broadcast limitations. By ditching dialogue for universal body language and leveraging a massive YouTube presence, the French production has evolved from a niche television project into a top-tier digital entertainment phenomenon.

Created by Olivier Jean-Marie and produced by Xilam Animation, Zig & Sharko debuted in December 2010. The show draws inspiration from classic silent slapstick traditions like Tom and Jerry and Wile E. Coyote. Its premise is simple: Zig, a brown hyena, constantly attempts to capture Marina, a mermaid, to eat her, while Sharko, a great white shark, acts as her muscular bodyguard. The series relies entirely on gestures and emotional expressions, allowing it to transcend language barriers and find audiences across diverse global markets, from Nickelodeon India to Cartoon Network Arabic.

The show's evolution reflects shifting cultural priorities. While Marina initially served as a passive prize to be rescued, the second season saw her character become more active, influenced by the rise of female empowerment in the 2010s. The production has also undergone significant visual and narrative shifts. After starting on a volcanic island, the characters moved to a cruise ship in the third season, and by the fourth, Marina gained magical sandals that granted her human legs and superhuman abilities. This adaptability has kept the franchise fresh, with seasons five and six currently in production for release in 2027 and 2028.

Digital distribution proved to be the series' greatest catalyst for growth. After Xilam began uploading high-quality episodes to YouTube in 2015, the show exploded in popularity. As of March 2025, the official channel boasts 16 million subscribers, ranking it among the top 10 most-subscribed French channels on the platform. Individual episodes and compilations have garnered hundreds of millions of views, with the episode 'The Were-Yena' alone reaching over 144 million views by May 2024. This success has even spawned a spin-off, The Adventures of Bernie, which follows Zig's hermit crab sidekick as he uses his ingenuity to navigate the ocean depths.
