In 2018, Zippo officially trademarked the sound of its windproof lighter's click. A tiny lever called a spring-loaded toggling cam creates this unique sound, ensuring the lid remains firmly shut or ajar. While the sound is a hallmark of the brand, the mechanism itself is designed for functionality: the lid's movement allows the lighter to be closed to starve the flame of oxygen without cutting off the fuel supply.
The lighter's enduring legacy is rooted in its role during World War II. While the company never had an official military contract, the U.S. military requested that base exchange stores carry the lighters. During the war, Zippo ceased consumer production to dedicate all manufacturing to the military. Because of metal shortages, the company switched from brass to a black crackle finished steel. A war correspondent even described the Zippo as "probably the most important element on the front."
The brand's cultural weight shifted significantly during the Vietnam War. Soldiers frequently engraved their lighters with personal mottos, creating sought-after collector's items. The term "Zippo squad" even entered military jargon to describe units assigned to burn villages, while the M132 armored flamethrower was colloquially referred to as a "Zippo." Today, the brand maintains a "works or we fix it free" lifetime guarantee, claiming that in nearly 75 years, no one has spent a cent on mechanical repairs for their lighters.
