In short: Before it became a Cartoon Network staple, Adventure Time was a seven-minute short that Nickelodeon passed on. Now, the franchise spans a vast multiverse, following Finn the Human and Jake the Dog through the ruins of a nuclear wasteland known as the Land of Ooo.

The franchise began with a standalone animated short produced by Pendleton Ward in 2006. Although Nickelodeon executives declined the option for the project, the short became a viral sensation on the internet. This momentum led Cartoon Network to commission a full-length series, which premiered on April 5, 2010, and concluded its original run on September 3, 2018. The initial short was created for Fred Seibert's Random! Cartoons incubator. This early production was released on the Nicktoons Network in early 2007.

Set in the Land of Ooo, the narrative unfolds a thousand years after a cataclysmic nuclear conflict called the Mushroom War. The story follows the coming-of-age journey of Finn the Human and his adoptive brother, Jake the Dog, a magical entity capable of shifting his size and shape at will. Their adventures involve a complex multiverse where different versions of characters inhabit various dimensions. The setting was devastated by a nuclear event known as the Mushroom War. This conflict occurred a millennium before the show's main events.

Beyond the central duo, the world is populated by diverse beings, including Princess Bubblegum—a sentient piece of gum—and Marceline the Vampire Queen, a thousand-year-old rock enthusiast. The franchise has expanded significantly through spin-offs like Distant Lands and Fionna and Cake, as well as various comic book series and video games. Its cultural impact is evidenced by eight Primetime Emmy Awards and a wide array of other accolades. The series has inspired numerous media, including various card games and multiple video game titles. It has also earned several prestigious awards, such as a Peabody and multiple Annie Awards.
