The logistical puzzle of shifting seasons and stolen episodes
In short: How does a television season end up with the wrong episodes? For Adventure Time's eighth season, the final product was a result of a structural reorganization that combined the tail end of one season with the beginning of another, creating a unique narrative tapestry.
The composition of Adventure Time's eighth season was not a linear progression as originally planned. On July 7, 2015, The Hollywood Reporter announced the renewal of the series, but the actual rollout of the eighth season was altered by Cartoon Network's streaming strategy. Originally, the seventh season was intended to conclude with the episode "Reboot," while the eighth season was slated to begin with "Two Swords." The series follows Finn, a human boy, and his magical dog companion, Jake. They reside in a post-apocalyptic land called Ooo. Their adventures often involve battling monsters and interacting with characters like Princess Bubblegum and the Ice King.
When the network moved to upload the seventh season to streaming platforms, they chose to end it prematurely with the 26th episode, "The Thin Yellow Line." This decision forced a structural merger: the episodes from "Broke His Crown" through "Reboot" (originally intended for season seven) were combined with the episodes from "Two Swords" through the "Islands" miniseries (originally intended for season eight). The final tally of episodes became official when the full seventh season DVD debuted on 18 July 2017. The season's finale, a miniseries titled Islands, premiered in early 2017. It featured a voyage across the ocean to uncover Finn's past. This narrative arc culminated at Founder's Island, where Finn finally met his mother, Minerva.
Despite these logistical shifts, the season maintained high production standards, utilizing a process where two-to-three-page outlines were transformed into full storyboards by artists like Moynihan and the returning Ako Castuera. The season also served as a transitional period for the production crew, marking the final appearances of several long-serving storyboard artists before they moved on to other projects, such as the series Uncle Grandpa. The production team utilized a collaborative recording style to ensure natural dialogue between the main cast. This method was compared to a live play reading. Additionally, the season featured guest animation from creators like James Baxter and the Small-Butera duo.
