From hydropower roots to the largest construction firm in Canada
In short: What began in 1911 as a small Montreal consulting office has evolved into a global engineering giant. Once known as SNC-Lavalin, this massive enterprise has shaped everything from massive hydroelectric stations to complex transit systems, recently rebranding to AtkinsRéalis to honor its diverse French-Canadian and international legacy.
The company's origins trace back to 1911, when Arthur Surveyer established an engineering office in Montréal following his studies in Belgium and at Polytechnique Montréal. Working alongside partner Augustin Frigon, the firm initially specialized in hydraulics and hydropower projects, such as the Saint-Maurice River hydroelectric power station. Over the decades, the firm expanded through various partnerships, eventually becoming known as SNC. Initial progress involved creating a grid for distributing power to Grand-Mère. This work helped establish the firm's reputation in the industrial sector.
By the 1980s, the firm had become a dominant force in Canadian engineering. In 1985, Lavalin reported $625 million in operating revenues and employed 5,700 people, making it Canada's largest engineering firm at the time. This period also saw the company diversify into media, founding The Weather Network and MétéoMédia in 1988. The organization also managed significant infrastructure, such as the fabric roof for Montreal's Olympic Stadium. Additionally, it was involved in the James Bay Project.
The company's reach is vast, with operations in over 160 countries and a workforce of approximately 37,000 employees. Its services span critical sectors including mining, metallurgy, nuclear power, and mass transit. However, its history has not been without scrutiny; the firm's management teams have faced investigations regarding allegations under the Corruption of Foreign Public Officials Act, specifically concerning contracts in Kerala and Libya. The company's expertise extends to the construction of major hospitals and complex bridge-tunnel systems. It also provides services for diverse facilities, including airports and marine installations.
In 2023, the company underwent a significant rebranding to AtkinsRéalis. The new name was chosen to combine the Atkins legacy with 'Réalis,' a term inspired by the company's French-Canadian roots and the city of Montréal, while also evoking the word 'realise'. The rebranding followed the acquisition of the UK-based Atkins in 2017. This strategic move helped solidify its current global identity.
