The bread giant born from a child's favorite Disney movies
In short: How does a small bakery in Mexico City become the world's largest bread producer? It started with 34 employees and a name inspired by Dumbo and Bambi. Today, it manages over 100 brands across four continents, balancing massive industrial scale with a commitment to renewable energy.
Founded on December 2, 1945, Panificación Bimbo began as a modest operation selling white loaf bread, rye, and toast. The brand name 'Bimbo' was actually selected from a list of candidates including PanRex and Sabrosoy. It was ultimately chosen because it combined the names of Disney's Bambi and Dumbo—the favorite films of Marinela, the daughter of co-founder Lorenzo Servitje Sendra. Interestingly, the founders later discovered that 'bimbo' is Italian slang for children and that the Chinese word for bread sounds similar to the brand name.
The company’s growth trajectory was fueled by aggressive expansion and strategic acquisitions. By the 1970s, it established a corporate structure and began entering diverse markets like marmalade in 1973 and sweets in 1978. A major turning point occurred in the late 1990s under Daniel Servitje’s leadership as CEO, which saw the company acquire iconic American brands like Mrs Baird's Bakeries and George Weston Limited (owner of Thomas', Oroweat, and Arnold). This propelled Bimbo into a global powerhouse with over 3 million points of sale.
Today, Grupo Bimbo operates in over 33 countries with an annual sales volume of $15 billion. While it is often cited as the world's largest bakery, this claim has been contested by the Japanese Yamazaki Baking Company. Beyond production, the company is pivoting toward sustainability; it joined the RE100 initiative to reach 100% renewable energy by 2025 and committed to making 100% of its packaging recyclable or compostable by that same year.
