The Bloody Mary's true origin is hidden in a 1939 Havana recipe
In short: The history of the Bloody Mary is a maze of conflicting claims and unverified legends. While many credit French bartenders or New York comedians, a single 1939 recipe from a Cuban bar might actually be the first time this iconic drink ever hit the printed page.
The lineage of the Bloody Mary is clouded by competing narratives. One popular claim, offered by the granddaughter of French bartender Fernand Petiot, suggests he invented the drink in 1921 at the New York Bar in Paris. In this version, the cocktail was originally called a "Bucket of Blood." However, this claim remains unverified by historical records.
Other theories place the invention in New York during the 1930s. The 21 Club attributes the drink to bartender Henry Zbikiewicz or comedian George Jessel. A 1939 gossip column allegedly described Jessel's "pick-me-up" as half tomato juice and half vodka. Conversely, Petiot himself claimed in a 1964 New Yorker article that he refined Jessel's drink into the modern Bloody Mary in 1934 while working at the St. Regis Hotel.
Despite these stories, there is a lack of verifiable evidence prior to 1939. The first documented printing of a vodka and tomato juice recipe is the "Mary Rose" from Havana's La Florida Bar, published in early 1939. This predates the first known mention of a Bloody Mary in Lucius Beebe's 1946 bar book by seven years. The Mary Rose may have arrived in Cuba from New York via Domingo Bures, a man who traveled frequently between Miami, Havana, and New York during the 1930s.
While the Red Snapper appeared in a 1941 cocktail book as a functional equivalent, the Mary Rose stands as the earliest known printed record of the classic proportions. It highlights how cocktail history is often a mix of oral tradition and the fact that the first person to write it down wins the title of "origin."
