How a YouTube pilot helped Jeremy Shada land a legendary voice role
In short: Before becoming the iconic voice of Finn the Human, Jeremy Shada had to match his own brother's performance. This unusual audition process turned a sketch-comedy actor into a staple of modern animation, leading to a career spanning from voice acting to pop-punk music.
Jeremy Shada's ascent to stardom is deeply intertwined with his family's creative talents. Born on January 21, 1997, Shada moved to Los Angeles with his family and began his acting journey at just seven years old. He was largely inspired to pursue the craft by his older brother, Zack Shada, who is also an actor. This familial connection would prove pivotal when Shada began auditioning for major roles, often following the guidance of a voice-over agent.
The most significant turning point occurred in 2009 when Shada's agent suggested he audition for the role of Finn in the animated series Adventure Time. The audition process was uniquely technical; Shada had to match his voice to the performance of his brother, Zack, who had voiced the character (originally named Penn) in the show's pilot episode. After watching the pilot on YouTube, Shada successfully matched his brother's vocal qualities during auditions with creator Pendleton Ward and the show's producers, securing the role that would define his career.
Beyond voice acting, Shada has demonstrated significant versatility across different media. He has appeared in live-action roles, such as playing young Charlie Pace in flashbacks on the series Lost, and in the 2020 Netflix musical Julie and the Phantoms. His musical interests include being part of the pop-punk group Make Out Monday, established alongside his brother in 2014. This musical talent was also showcased in a 2012 Cartoon Network rap video, "Running Errands with My Mom," which has since amassed over one million views.
Shada's professional demands necessitated a non-traditional education, as he was homeschooled to accommodate his filming schedules. On March 8, 2020, he married Carolynn Rowland, a dancer with the Los Angeles Ballet. The couple has since expanded their family, welcoming a first son in August 2024 and a second son in June 2026.
