The studio that launched Tumblr from a rented desk
In short: Before it became a social media giant, Tumblr was born in the offices of Frederator Studios. Founded by Fred Seibert, this animation powerhouse didn't just create iconic cartoons; it acted as a digital incubator for the next generation of internet culture and video distribution.
Founded in January 1997 by Fred Seibert, Frederator Studios emerged from Seibert's previous success at Hanna-Barbera, where he created the influential 'What a Cartoon!' showcase. This incubator model allowed the studio to launch a massive variety of content, ranging from the Nickelodeon series 'The Fairly OddParents' to the Cartoon Network hit 'Adventure Time'. By 1998, the studio was already releasing its first cartoons, establishing a legacy of producing over 16 television series and more than 200 miniseries.
The studio's influence extends far beyond traditional television. In 2007, David Karp launched the microblogging platform Tumblr from a rented desk within Frederator's Park Avenue South offices, working alongside chief engineer Marco Arment. Seibert himself was among the platform's earliest bloggers. Frederator also pioneered digital video through 'Channel Frederator,' launched in 2005 as the first cartoon podcast, which became a top video podcast on Apple's iTunes.
As the digital landscape shifted, Frederator adapted by creating the Channel Frederator Network, a multi-channel network designed to help independent YouTube animators monetize their work. This network has generated over one billion views and manages hundreds of channels, including 'Simon's Cat,' which holds the distinction of being YouTube's second most popular animated channel with over 2.8 million subscribers. Through strategic acquisitions and mergers, such as the 2016 merger into Wow! Unlimited Media, Frederator continues to shape how animation is consumed across web and broadcast platforms.
