The moth that breathes out poison to ward off spiders
In short: The tobacco hornworm is a master of chemical warfare. While nicotine is lethal to most muscle-moving animals, this caterpillar thrives on it. It doesn't just tolerate the toxin; it metabolizes it and exhales it as a defensive shield, a biological feat known as "toxic halitosis.",
The tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) possesses a specialized genetic toolkit to handle the neurotoxins of its primary food source. While nicotine typically paralyzes animals by targeting acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction, M. sexta utilizes a specific gene, cytochrome P450 6B46 (CYP6B46), to metabolize the toxin. This allows the larvae to convert nicotine into metabolites, which are then transported from the gut to the hemolymph.
The defense mechanism is remarkably sophisticated. About 0.65% of these nicotine metabolites are reconverted into nicotine and released into the air through the caterpillar's spiracles. This creates a zone of toxicity that deters predators like wolf spiders. Research has confirmed this efficacy: hornworms with low levels of the CYP6B46 gene or those fed on nicotine-deficient plants are significantly more susceptible to predation.
Beyond chemical defense, the species employs acoustic aposematism. When attacked, the larvae produce short clicking sounds from their mandibles, ranging from 5 to 50 kHz. The intensity of these clicks increases with the number of attacks, serving as a warning to predators that the caterpillar is both toxic and aggressive. This combination of chemical "halitosis" and audible warnings makes it a formidable model for studying complex survival behaviors.
Because of its large size—reaching up to 100 millimeters and 20 grams—and its accessible nervous system, M. sexta has become a vital model organism in neurobiology and medicine. It is currently used in studies ranging from chronic inflammatory bowel diseases to testing new contrast agents for medical imaging like CT, MRI, and PET scans.
