In short: Before they were gridiron rivals, Michigan and Ohio were literal combatants. A mapping error in the Northwest Ordinance triggered the Toledo War, a skirmish over fertile land that laid the foundations for one of the most heated rivalries in American sports history.

The animosity between the Michigan Wolverines and the Ohio State Buckeyes is rooted in a 19th-century territorial conflict known as the Toledo War (1835–36). Conflict emerged because the Mitchell Map, which determined boundaries via the 1787 Northwest Ordinance, inaccurately situated Lake Michigan's southern extremity five to eight miles north of its true position. This error left the fertile, agricultural Toledo Strip in a state of jurisdictional limbo, sparking a skirmish between the two states.

While Michigan eventually secured the Upper Peninsula, Ohio was awarded Toledo, an area vital for its shipping and agriculture. This historical friction transitioned from the battlefield to the football field in 1897. For over a century, the two programs have battled for dominance, often deciding the Big Ten Conference title. During the 1960s and '70s, the rivalry reached a peak known as the 'Ten Year War,' defined by the legendary coaching rivalry between Woody Hayes of Ohio State and Bo Schembechler of Michigan.

The stakes of the matchup have evolved alongside the sport. Historically, the game often determined Rose Bowl matchups or Big Ten titles. Since 2011, the introduction of a conference championship game has shifted the landscape, yet the intensity remains. Whether it is the battle for bragging rights or the fight for a championship, the rivalry remains a cornerstone of college football, with Michigan currently holding an overall record of 62–53–6.
