In short: In 1887, Michigan didn't just beat Notre Dame; they gave them the playbook. Because Notre Dame had no football team of its own, Michigan students actually organized a tutorial session before the first game ever kicked off in South Bend.

The rivalry began on November 23, 1887, under unusual circumstances. Two Michigan players who had previously attended Notre Dame reached out to the university's athletic program to introduce them to the sport. Because Notre Dame was a novice, the first meeting wasn't initially viewed as a competitive match but as an instructional session. For the first 30 minutes, the schools scrimmaged together, with Michigan 'exchanging six men' for Notre Dame players to teach them the mechanics of the game.

The actual game lasted only half an hour in melting snow and mud. Michigan won 8–0, but the primary goal was education. This initial success led to a formal football association at Notre Dame and a series of spring games in 1888. During those matches, Michigan's James E. Duffy even defeated American sprint champion Harry Jewett in a pre-game dash, establishing an early era of dominance where Michigan won the first eight contests.

The rivalry has been defined by long hiatuses and shifting power dynamics. After a decade of silence following 1888, the teams met again in 1898—the year Michigan's undefeated season inspired its fight song, 'The Victors.' One of the most significant historical pivots occurred in 1902. Michigan’s legendary 'Point-a-Minute' team, which had averaged a point every minute of play for years, was notably slowed by Notre Dame in a 23–0 victory in Toledo.

Today, both programs remain elite producers of talent, with Notre Dame producing 522 NFL draft selections and Michigan 392. While the series has been suspended multiple times—including a recent 14-year hiatus ending in 2018—the historical record remains lopsided. Michigan leads the all-time series 25–17–1, with one of Notre Dame's wins vacated by the NCAA due to sanctions.
