How a passion for doll-making sparked a massive cosplay phenomenon
In short: Wakana Gojo spent years hiding his love for crafting hina dolls due to social trauma. Everything changed when he met Marin Kitagawa, a popular classmate who saw his talent and encouraged him to create cosplay costumes. This collaboration transformed a reclusive boy into a successful craftsman and a beloved manga icon.
Written and illustrated by Shinichi Fukuda, My Dress-Up Darling follows the journey of Wakana Gojo, an orphan raised by his grandfather, a hina doll artist. Wakana aspired to become a kashira-shi, a specialist who crafts the heads of these traditional dolls. However, a traumatic childhood memory of being criticized by a friend for his hobby left him reclusive and without friends until he met Marin Kitagawa.
Marin, a high school student and archetype of a gyaru, possesses an outgoing nature and a deep love for anime. Her discovery of Wakana's talent led to a partnership where they created unique costumes, helping Wakana gain confidence and a sense of belonging within the cosplay community. The series is noted for its detailed portrayal of character psychology and the technical processes behind doll-making, makeup, and photography.
The series has seen immense commercial success. Originally serialized in Square Enix's Young Gangan magazine from January 19, 2018, to March 21, 2025, the manga has grown from 1.5 million copies in circulation in February 2022 to over 15 million copies by October 2025. Its popularity has driven multiple adaptations, including an anime series produced by CloverWorks and a live-action television drama that aired in late 2024.
The narrative concludes with a sense of fulfillment for the protagonists; Wakana becomes a successful doll maker and eventually marries Marin, and the two have a daughter named Nichika.
