How a series about cosplay captured the joy of sharing a craft
In short: Beyond the vibrant colors of anime lies a deeper appreciation for technical skill. Based on Shinichi Fukuda's manga, this CloverWorks production explores the intricate world of cosplay, earning praise for its portrayal of craftsmanship and the complex, universal personalities of its two central characters.
Produced by CloverWorks and directed by Keisuke Shinohara, the My Dress-Up Darling television series is an adaptation of Shinichi Fukuda's manga. The first season aired between January 9 and March 27, 2022, on networks including Tokyo MX and BS11. The series follows the lives of Gojo and Marin, characters described by Collider's David Lynn as being simultaneously broadly universal and surprisingly complex, possessing distinct strengths and flaws. The adaptation was first revealed in the ninth issue of Young Gangan. It features music composed by Takeshi Nakatsuka. Additionally, Kazumasa Ishida served as the series chief animation director and character designer.
The production's success is reflected in its critical reception. Reviewing the initial season, IGN's Kambole Campbell lauded the series for its authentic acting and its wonderful depiction of the pleasure found in practicing a craft. Slashfilm's Rafael Motamayor highlighted how the series allows audiences to appreciate the hard work required for cosplay, specifically praising the English translation for capturing the protagonist Marin's unique personality and idioms. The first season's opening theme, 'Sansan Days', was performed by Spira Spica. Meanwhile, the ending theme 'Koi no Yukue' featured vocals by Akari Akase.
While generally well received, the series has faced scrutiny regarding its content. Some viewers found certain moments uncomfortable due to fan service and the sexualization of characters. For instance, Alejandra Bodden of Bleeding Cool praised the exploration of sexuality but criticized specific scenes, while IGN's Campbell noted leery moments that might distract some viewers. Despite this, the series remains a significant work in the genre, with a second season airing from July 6 to September 21, 2025, and a worldwide Netflix streaming release on April 25, 2026. The series was licensed by Muse Communication for Southeast Asian audiences. Funimation originally handled the simulcast for viewers outside of Asia.
