Beyond the screen: How Phoebe Waller-Bridge became a powerhouse of modern storytelling
In short: Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a creative force whose sharp, offbeat writing transformed television comedy and drama. From the stage to blockbuster films, her career spans everything from Fleabag to James Bond. Yet, despite her massive success, she remains a private figure who avoids social media to escape the pressure of constant performance.
Born in 1985 in Hammersmith, London, Phoebe Waller-Bridge graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 2006. Her early career was rooted in theatre, where she co-founded the DryWrite Theatre Company in 2007. Her breakthrough came with the creation of Fleabag, a project that began as a short play at the London Storytelling Festival in 2012 before evolving into a critically acclaimed television series that earned her multiple Primetime Emmy Awards and Golden Globes.
Waller-Bridge’s influence extends far beyond her own starring roles. She served as the showrunner for the first series of the thriller Killing Eve and contributed her signature humor to the screenplay of the 2021 James Bond film No Time to Die. Her production company, Wells Street Films, continues to develop new projects, including an adaptation of the novel Sign Here and a Tomb Raider series for Amazon Prime, with whom she has maintained a long-standing overall deal since 2019.
Despite her public profile, Waller-Bridge maintains a deliberate distance from the digital world. She has stated that she avoids social media because she does not want to feel the constant pressure to be funny or deal with the negativity that often accompanies online platforms. This commitment to her craft over public engagement has allowed her to focus on her work, whether she is voicing droids in Star Wars, directing music videos, or adapting complex narratives for global streaming audiences.
