Can the precision of a classical violin sonata mirror the craft of fine cooking?
In short: J. Kenji López-Alt is bridging the gap between the culinary and musical arts. By pairing world-class performances from the Seattle Chamber Music Society with live demonstrations from elite chefs, he aims to reveal the deep, tangible parallels between the way we compose a dish and how we structure a symphony.
For decades, J. Kenji López-Alt has nurtured a fascination with the structural similarities between food and music. While he initially pursued a career outside of music, his move to Seattle and subsequent involvement with the Seattle Chamber Music Society provided the catalyst for a new project. This initiative, titled Tasting Notes, is designed to move beyond theoretical discussion, offering a live stage performance that allows audiences to hear, see, and taste the connections between these two creative disciplines.
The event, scheduled for July 19th at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, features a diverse lineup of experts. Attendees will witness Keiji Tsukasaki of Ltd. Edition sushi break down a whole tuna, while Kevin Smith of Beast and Cleaver demonstrates the creation of an ornate pâté en croûte. Further culinary insights include a multimedia presentation from Aisha Ibrahim of Canlis and a chocolate tempering demonstration by Kelly Van Arsdale of Spinnaker Chocolate. These demonstrations are interspersed with performances of works by Bach and Schumann, featuring musicians such as James Ehnes and Tessa Lark.
Beyond the artistic exploration, the event includes a participatory element: an attempt to shatter the world record for the largest simultaneous chocolate tasting. For López-Alt, the project represents a personal milestone, allowing him to finally perform on a professional concert stage alongside world-class musicians. The endeavor is described as a blend of excitement and nerves, serving as a unique intersection where the rigor of the kitchen meets the discipline of the concert hall, inviting the audience to experience the sensory harmony of both worlds.
