Saving a tooth from the inside out
In short: A root canal sounds like a daunting dental ordeal, but it is actually a precise surgical preservation. Instead of pulling a damaged tooth, dentists perform an internal renovation to remove infection and restore function, transforming a source of pain into a stable part of your smile.
The primary goal of a root canal—performed by a dentist or a specialist called an endodontist—is to treat an infected tooth. This infection typically occurs in the pulp, the soft tissue deep inside the tooth. The pulp can become compromised due to several factors: decay, gum disease, physical trauma like chips or cracks, or the development of a dental abscess, which is a localized buildup of pus.
The procedure functions as an internal cleaning and sealing process. First, a local anesthetic ensures the patient remains pain-free while the dentist drills into the tooth to access the interior. If an abscess is present, it must be drained first. The infected pulp is then meticulously removed, and the remaining canal space is cleaned and shaped. This preparation allows for a filling that prevents future bacteria from re-entering the tooth.
Because of the complexity involved, these treatments often require two or more appointments lasting between one and two hours each. Patients may receive a temporary filling while the process is ongoing. For teeth that suffered severe infection, a crown—a cap covering the entire tooth—is often required to provide structural integrity. While some swelling or soreness is normal for a couple of weeks post-treatment, the procedure successfully preserves the natural tooth structure that would otherwise require extraction.
In the UK, root canal treatment is categorized as a Band 2 treatment under NHS dental costs, though many people pay for private care. The recovery phase involves managing minor discomfort with over-the-counter medications like paracetamol or ibuprofen while waiting for the local anesthetic to wear off.
