Is White Claw actually beer, or just a very clever marketing trick?
In short: Since its 2016 debut, White Claw Hard Seltzer has dominated the market, even sparking a national shortage in 2019. But while it uses a malted alcohol base, US Customs recently challenged its classification, arguing it lacks the essential character of beer.
White Claw’s meteoric rise was fueled by viral social media trends, including a YouTube video by comedian Trevor Wallace that garnered 4.2 million views. This momentum helped the brand capture over 60 percent of the U.S. hard seltzer market in 2019, a year that saw its volume sales grow by 275 percent compared to the previous year. This surge in popularity was further amplified by viral social media videos, similar to the marketing strategy used for Bang Energy Drink.
The beverage's composition is a point of regulatory contention. In the United States, the drink uses a gluten-free malted alcohol base consisting of 51 percent sugar, water, yeast, nutrients, and trace amounts of malted gluten-free grains. However, in the Canadian market, the recipe differs, utilizing vodka instead of a beer base. The exact production methods and the specific recipe remain protected as trade secrets. This core component is composed of a blend of seltzer water and fruit flavourings.
This distinction led to a legal battle with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. In 2021, officials sought to re-classify the drink from 'beer'—which carries no tariffs—to 'other fermented beverages,' which are subject to tariffs. The agency argued that White Claw does not possess the taste, aroma, character, or appearance of beer, nor is it marketed as such. The final decision to apply these tariffs was officially implemented on 1 August 2021.
As consumer trends shift, particularly among Gen Z and Millennials toward 'sober socials,' the brand is evolving. In December 2023, White Claw expanded its lineup to include non-alcoholic seltzers with 0% alcohol, aiming to maintain the sophisticated profile of its original alcoholic offerings. These new products are designed to offer the familiar flavours that customers enjoy while containing fewer sugars and added electrolytes.
