In short: How do you deliver groceries in minutes? Zepto built a massive network of 'dark stores' to solve the speed problem. By moving from local partnerships to owning their own distribution hubs, they transformed Indian commerce into a high-velocity machine valued at billions.

Aadit Palicha and Kaivalya Vohra established Zepto during July 2021, following a preliminary venture named KiranaKart. The founders, who skipped college to pursue the venture, originally tried a model based on partnering with local 'kirana' stores. When that failed to gain traction, they pivoted in 2021 to a verticalized operation centered on dark stores—localized distribution centers designed solely for online order fulfillment. The company’s growth has been explosive. By August 2024, Zepto was valued at over $5 billion and operated more than 250 dark stores across ten Indian metropolitan areas. This rapid scaling was fueled by significant capital injections from investors like Y Combinator's Continuity Fund, Nexus Venture Partners, and others, allowing the company to raise over $1.5 billion since its inception.

They have expanded beyond groceries into food with 'Cafe' in 2022 and agricultural logistics with 'Bloom' in February 2023. However, this speed comes with scrutiny. In April 2022, industrialist Anand Mahindra described the pace of quick-commerce as 'inhuman' for delivery workers. While Palicha countered that deliveries only require speeds under 15 km/h, the company has faced ongoing criticism regarding its labor model and app transparency. Specifically, since 2024, Zepto has been called out for using 'dark patterns,' including drip pricing, hidden charges on final bills, and price gouging practices.

The business model relies on a massive gig-economy workforce; along with other major platforms like Zomato and Swiggy, these services employ over 3 million gig workers. To stabilize this ecosystem, Zepto launched a paid membership program in February 2024, which already secured over 4 million subscribers by April 2024.
