In short: From its 2015 beginnings as Karrier, Rapido has rapidly scaled across India. By navigating complex legal battles over bike taxi legality, the Bengaluru-based startup has transformed from a simple ride-hailing service into a massive logistics and food delivery player with a billion-dollar valuation.

Founded in 2015 by Aravind Sanka, Pavan Guntupalli, and SR Rishikesh, Rapido originally operated under the name Karrier. The company's core model focuses on bike taxi aggregation, where users book rides with a driver known as a 'Captain.' To maintain service standards, vehicles used by these riders cannot be older than 2010. The startup's founders are notable IIT and PESU alumni. Additionally, the company's leadership includes significant investment from Hero MotoCorp's chairman and the former head of Google India.

The company's growth has been punctuated by significant legal friction. Because bike taxis often operate in a regulatory grey area, Rapido has faced numerous seizures and bans. In 2019, the Madras High Court banned its operations across Tamil Nadu, and in Bangalore, the company was reported to be operating illegally by having Captains disguise themselves as food delivery executives. Similar seizures occurred in Coimbatore in 2018, Bangalore in February 2019, and Pune in February 2022.

Despite these hurdles, Rapido has successfully diversified. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, it expanded into last-mile logistics. It later introduced auto rickshaw hailing in October 2020, taxicabs in 2023, and a food delivery app called Ownly in August 2025. This expansion helped drive its valuation from $830 million in April 2022 to a unicorn status of $1.1 billion in September 2024, following a $200 million Series E funding round. This growth was supported by a major Series D round involving Shell Ventures and Westbridge. Furthermore, the company's scale reached over 15,000 registered riders by late 2018.
